Nick's Blog #021: Movement Creeping

Movement Creeping... yup, I'm still milking that line for all it's worth. :)

Anyways, a very, VERY quick update on last weeks new demo recordings and the writing of new songs. On Monday Easton and I got together and we collaborated on a new song idea I had. It's a really cool 3/4, waltz rhythm swells and sinks with loads of smooth synth. It is unlike anything we've ever recorded but we have yet to record acoustic guitars or vocals so I am thinking these will bring the signature (if you can all it that...) D&S sound. The lyrics are slowly coming together for that song over the last couple of days. And when I say slowly I mean slowly. I've been tweaking a word here or there, but for the most part this song only has one verse written. I plan on hitting the pen and paper over the next couple of days though and getting more of this song's lyrics written so I can finish up the demo. Because of the lack of lyrical content this song doesn't even really have a working title yet, we've just been calling it Demo #2.

Also a few weeks back we recorded a demo of one of Easton's new songs that I am really loving. This one we have a pretty good demo of worked out and will probably begin working on it as a full band for shows sometime this week. I am super excited about this one and can't wait for everyone to hear it!

Until next time...

Nick's Blog #020: A Much Needed Update!

Hello everyone! I have been meaning to come on here and post for weeks but life has proven to be a bit busy lately. Here is a (very) quick update from the D&S camp. By the way I am testing out a new iPhone app right now, writing this from bed at 2 in the morning so please excuse me if my spelling and grammar is a bit off!

First on the update list: we recently played our very first show as a full band. It was a great show and a really awesome experience! I had forgotten how fun it was to play with a band on stage. The energy I felt durring the first few seconds of The Psychologist, which was the first song we played, was incredible. Not to knock on the acoustic shows we have been playin for the past 6 or 7 months, but it really is a way different experience for us to play as a full band and is in my opinion so much more fun. The future of our live shows is really sort of unknown at this point. For now it looks like we will keep playing local (Northern California-ish) shows until we can figure out how to get past some of our hurdles of playing for a wider audience. So the live show as a full band was a small step for us towards a bigger goal... Were just not quite sure what that goal is yet.

As for new D&S material: Were about nine months after the release of our last album Autumn in the Evening. Just as we did after the release of Fireworks we took a few months to relax and have now begun writting a bunch of new tunes. I'd say we have been writing (in a realatively relaxed fasion) for about a month now. These writing sessions have been far different from anything we have ever done. In the past none of us lived in the same cities durring the time we were writting songs. So the majority of any particular song was written by either Easton or myself. It's still somewhat the same now but we are all living in the same city now which is allowing us to sit down with each other way more than ever before and work on songs together. In the past if I was stuck on a particular song or a part of a song, I either waited until something new came to me (which was sometimes months) or the song simply never was finished, which sadly was the case most of the time. Now I have simply been able to sit down with Easton and Ray and we can usually come up with somehing rather quick. Even if we change it later, at least the song can be played and has a chance to develop and grow, somthing that a lot of my songs in the last were not ever given the chance to do.

One more quick note on theses new songs: we still aren't completely sure how we will be releasing these so we are holding off on announcing any new albums or eps or anything of that sort. But we should have some news for you in the next couple of months.

I hope everyone is well in D&S land. I hope we have not lost all of our readers in our couple of month absence from dreamofsleeping. Hit me up with a comment and let me know you are all still out there!

We had such a great time at the show tonight. This was the third or fourth time we have played at East Village Coffee Lounge in Monterey and every time we have gotten such a great turn out and awesome support from everyone! Tonight was our first ever show with our new friend Anthony playing percussion. Having him play with us really added a lot to the songs and we think it is the best our live show has ever sounded. Very soon we will be playing live shows with him on a full on drum kit! Should be fun! Above is a link to watch the recording of the show taken through our then 'live' online stream of the show. Below is a high quality video of us playing a cover the song Ice Factory by one of our favorite bands in the world: Cassino. Also a video of us playing the song Benson Hedges by the band Fun.
